Nothing passed off as certain
Where the words come from, what the badges mean, who checks them and what we don't do.
The badges
Verified Confirmed by a keeper from the town.
Sourced We found it in a source we cite; no keeper has confirmed it yet.
To be checked It comes from an indirect source and we are not sure. If you speak the dialect, tell us if it's right.
Is it said like this? We have no source: it's not in the dictionary, we ask people who speak the dialect.
19th-century form It comes from a dictionary of that time: it may no longer be used.
The keepers
Every bell tower has three keepers: people from the town who speak the dialect. They confirm or correct the words; every decision is written down, with who made it and why. Until a keeper confirms it, a word is not «verified».
What we don't do
No machine translation and no invented words: if a word has no source, it doesn't enter the dictionary and we ask you. Words from non-commercial collections (such as Dialettitaliani.it for San Severo) only appear on pages without ads.
Sources and open data
The 15,141 words come from about a hundred sources, listed with their license on the Italian page. The whole dictionary can be downloaded freely (CC BY-SA 4.0) from Dati aperti.
